Uni work - Rooftop

It's been a while since I updated this blog :C I've been busy with uni work, mostly the rooftop project and FMP preparation. I'll keep the FMP development in our separate blog for now, but here are some work in progress shots of my rooftop. Still needs more textures and assets imported in, also reflective textures on windows and pool water.
I went with an abandoned/neglected penthouse theme. All pictures of rooftop flats look really polished and posh, so I thought it might be interesting to try something different.

Freud final

Completely forgot about my Freud model. Had a lot of rigging issues and everything, but thought I'd finish it anyway.
Also, discovered some pretty cool effects in Zbrush yesterday while playing around with Clay Polish. Instant zombifier: *A*

12 November 2011

Played around with the new zbrush yesterday, decided to make a stylised, chiseled character. This was fun (although I should have shaped the suit part a bit better) :D Let's just pretend I wasn't supposed to do uni work :I

Alleyway concept

Today we had an awesome workshop with Mitch Small. Here's something quick I did-we were supposed to concept a NY alleyway using photorefs and 3D blockouts. I didnt do as well as I hoped, but at least I learned a few tricks to practice :)

Venus with the Apple

I can't believe it's done. I was getting so stuck with this sculpture. Very draining project, but i learned a lot :)

And here's the original hipoly mesh in progress:

If I have time at the end of semester, I might redo the normal map and and sculpt the hair better, as well as solve some rigging issues. But right now I really ran out of time on this.

21 October 2011

A blockout/paintover I did in Max/Marmoset/Photoshop for an FMP idea.

Delicious Zbrush

Haven't updated this blog in a while >:I
Uni work is getting busy, and lack of posts might seem like I'm not doing anything. Truth is, I'm doing loads of stuff, but none of it is finished (and won't be for a while)
Here's my Final Major Project research blog. I'll most likely post my paintings and concepts in both blogs, however all the photos, random thoughts and whining will go there.
Besides researching Chinese environments, I've also been thinking about doing a joint FMP with my friend Sai, who's doing a classy brothel sort of thing. If my teachers will reject my original idea I'll probably go with that, as
there is so much cool stuff I could do D:
like this deer I've been sculpting:

Besides FMP stuff, we have two other projects to finish before Christmas.
Here's a wip of a sculpture I've been working on. This one's made entirely from a Zsphere armature. Originally I tried using Zsketch to draw the mass in, but the final version had an absolutely horrible topology. This one's actually workable. I'm also making the same  mesh straight in Max, just to get used to it.

And here's the sculpture I'm trying to replicate. "Venus with apple" by Bertel Thorvaldsen. Up until yesterday I was sure I'm sculpting Aphrodite, some website had this picture in the Aphrodite section. Damn you, Internets D:

More Freud

Hipoly version finished, although i might have to fix a few things :) Took me a ridiculous amount of time, but I learned a lot from doing this, mostly working with subtools and Transpose tool.
Recently I bought Manuel Scherer's Zbrush 4 Sculpting for Games and found it to be really useful. It's for beginners, but it still covers all the essential techniques for a game artist. I recommend it :P

Sigmund Freud sculpt

A half-Zbrushed character model I'm currently working on. Few weeks ago I got to visit the Freud museum in London which inspired me to sculpt him in the first place. Unfortunately the number of technical challenges I'm facing is killing my creativity :/. While  detailing the low poly mesh I've done some major changes in anatomy and proportions, so the original mesh is no longer usable. Luckily I still have the lowest subdivision preserved, so hopefully I'll be able to simply export the original topology from Zbrush. In the worst case scenario I'll retopo the mesh, it would be a good practice anyway.

08 October 2011

I'm seriously out of practice with painting. Must practice more :C

More lifedrawings

Had another lifedrawing session with friends today. I tried using Painter at the beginning, but it made my work look incredibly messy, so I'm not even going to post it. These are all done in SAI. It's amazing how software changes my painting style.

29 September 2011

First lifedrawing session with friends after the painfully long summer break :) I missed doing it. Definitely didn't miss posing, though. I'm pretty happy with the result, although I'm hoping to get more confident with colour next time.

                                              Anime desu desu!

26 September 2011

Can't believe I haven't posted for so long. Recently I was busy with a job, moving back to the UK and attending Eurogamer :) Luckily, I'm all settled in, and done with freelance. Can't wait to practice 3D! Tomorrow I'm starting a new personal character project.  Meanwhile, here's that pigman I've been trying to finish for ages. Looks horrible and the anatomy is awful, but it was a good learning experience. Don't want to work on that thing ever again XD

03 September 2011

all work and no play

Just realised it's been ages since I've posted anything. And yet I was ridicuously busy this week. In fact, I still have so much work to do, I shouldn't be allowed any time to doodle. I'm currently doing some concepts for a cityville-like game, it's pretty challenging, but hopefully this experience will prove itself useful. And having money is always nice.
I do miss 3D modelling though, and I still want to finish that pig character which I have successfully retopologised and just need to retexture the body :C Maybe later.
Meanwhile, silly things I scribble for stress release-

24 August 2011

granny from hell

This is what distracting myself with Zbrush does. D: Creeepyyy. I mostly focused on texturing/painting the skin in this one. Just downloaded a tutorial on eyes though, so hopefully next time i'll actually use subtools for them, instead of sculpting them straight into the face XD

23 August 2011

Self 2

I felt like updating my blog, but all the stuff I've been working on recently were commissions. So I decided to do a quick selfportrait XD It's been a while since I've done any studies. Felt a bit rusty. I am a horrible lifemodel, too- I can't even pose to myself without distracting, jeez! The face is as derp as always, but I'm happy with the colours. Wanted to spend more time on the jacket and all, but my back was in pain >:/
-just realised I only drew one eyebrow. hurrrr

Retopology adventures

Okay, I do realise that posting the same goddamn head three times in a row isn't making my blog any more exciting, but this is important! Kinda. I've just baked the details on to my retopo mesh and it looks just like it's supposed to. (ignore the neck, I'll bake it once I make the body) Before I used to make my lowpoly mesh in max, add the detail in Zbrush and then bake it, and for some reason this would always leave me with problems, areas losing detail or random artefacts. Perfectly fixable with Photoshop, of course, but still annoying. With retopology method, the end result looks exactly like the original sculpt.
I'm not sure if I'm happy with the mesh without the normal map - it doesn't look as defined as it should, despite the decent polycount. But I guess if I work on my topology a bit more, I'll do a better job next time.

17 August 2011

Scumbag Mecha looter!

Super-speedy. I wanted to draw something serious, but noooo. I just had to come up with something retarded :') Oh well.
"Got me a bitchin' TV!"

16 August 2011

pigman retopo

Tweaked the pigman in Zbrush some more and thought I should try retopologising it. For this one I used 3D coat. Works well, but I haven't done modelling in so long it looks like total crap :/ Trying to maintain a reasonable polycount with all the nessesary edgeloops=epic fail. The nose and chin have way too many polys that don't contribute to anything. Maybe I should restart :/

15 August 2011

I've realised it's been way too long since I've done any 3D. So I decided to get back to it by doing some sketching in Zbrush.  Started by sculpting a relatively normal human head, but then I decided to mess around with it and turned it into a pig :/ The original head still exists though, I might make a proper model out of it.

Devilette Spawning

Copying DA description, because I'm lazy.
I've been working on this on and off for a week or two, in small chunks (which is pretty different from my usual way of working). Originally wanted to come up with a fire-y sort of character, using just yellow and red palette. But then I added some black for contrast and this is when it went completely off the plan, not that I'm complaining XD Funny how the legs look the least finished, although I've started with them and probably spent just as much time as on everything else.

Need to do some studies. What kind of sketchblog only has finished stuff in it? :<

11 August 2011

Urban Shaman

Dammit blogger, WHY U NO WORK when I finish a painting for once :D Anyway, posting it now.

This was originally a quick distraction warm up, but I liked the girl's face so I decided to turn it into a proper character concept
I've been interested in mixing tribal with cyberpunk, and while this is a very rushed and unresearched attempt, it's still a start I guess.
Skirt pattern from cgtextures
I should seriously stop with the white backgrounds. Imagining a background after the character's done always seemed kinda silly though, so I guess my only solution is planning environment from the start.

08 August 2011

I've no idea why I'm posting this wonky doodle. But why not, it is a sketchbook afterall. Drew this at the opencanvas session with a friend. It's closely related to that Crowbar picture I did earlier. Every time I get an idea I exploit it for weeks, thinking of random stories until I get completely bored. >:/

07 August 2011

Penguin splash screen

An art test I did for a job. I won't reveal any details of it for now, but hopefully I'll get lucky :) If not, it's still a pretty neat portfolio piece. Although I do wish I worked more on the background, but I wanted to make sure I hit the deadline.

02 August 2011

redneck versus redneck

Just distracted myself (again) to test some photoshop brushes and ended up with this.
Hell yeah, zombie village 8/ This is so random.

31 July 2011

The Crow bar

Personal project. I missed cheesy cyberpunk art, so I decided to draw some eye candy for myself.
Illuststudio+Photoshop (Tried using excusively IllustStudio, but it's hard to get used to the brushes so far)
Just realised I've shrunk the original to this size and then saved the psd file *facepalm*
Oh Mary, you never learn >:C

28 July 2011

Eye Fairy mask

Sculpted another abomination. Used translucent Sculpey Premo for it again - I love this material so much, I went out and bought some more of it today :D It's great for organic stuff.
Also used acrylic paints, glue, varnish, glass eyes.
Other than that, I haven't been doing much artsy stuff outside commissions. There are some little paintings I have yet to finish, but that's about it. I should seriously get back into 3D before I fall behind again....

22 July 2011

20 July 2011

About time I posted something. This was done for a small competition we had, where you picked an artwork on deviantart and draw your version of it. Mine has veeery little to do with the original, but I'm still not sure if I should upload it on deviantart without asking the author :0
This was my second attempt at IllustStudio. I still need to tweak the brushes and stuff, but so far I'm really enjoying this program XD

15 July 2011

Tooth necklace

This is the first time I was commissioned to do something "real". Was really fun to make, although I'm not 100% happy with the realism. Used translucent Sculpey Premo, which turned out to be so much better than translucent Fimo! Much softer and more manageable, also has a slight yellowish tint to it, which fits better for the thing i'm doing. I bought Fimo twice and both times it was hard and breaking off even after conditioning. Perhaps I just got a bad batch, oh well.
Other than that, I've been doing regular digital portraiture commissions for some while now, and that's pretty much it. I should really get back to improving my portfolio.

10 July 2011

La Muerte

Decided to spoil myself and draw things that contribute nothing to my portfolio. I don't care though, I need to do art for fun every once in a while. And this was really, really fun to paint :D

03 July 2011

Probably the last time I get to do digital lifedrawing this summer ;A;
